- About Us
The oxygen you breathe was provided by plants. So were the clothes you wear, the materials from which we build our houses, those which feed all of our livestock, those who were the beginning of beverages, perfumes, medicines, and countless other products, including fuel for our vehicles. Yet many times we are blind to this reality: we see trees and grass as ornaments that belong “outdoors” without the gratitude or appreciation we owe these humblest of life forms. Bloomsdays aims to provide a return, a reunion, a reconciliation of man and flora, and a redefinition of the botanical experience. To know a flower truly, to remember its fragrance in your sleep, to make it a partner to assist you through the travails of modern life - that is the reconnection Bloomsdays strives for.
A tomato is not the red water balloon you find at the supermarket.
Mint is not a flavor of chewing gum.
Lavender is not a kind of laundry detergent.
Plants are living things, not brand names. Even the most common herbs exist in dozens of varieties from around the world, containing an unimagined spectrum of wholly unique flavors and essences that most of us will never know. Bloomsdays will make them known; will make the familiar new again as you discover your herbs truly for the first time.
Bloomsdays is inspired by James Joyce’s epic “Ulysses”, a novel set during a single day, June 16, 1904, and the seemingly ordinary yet never-the-less Homerian journey undertaken by the protagonist. We strive to recognize the extraordinary in the mundane, to respect the struggles each of us faces, and to evoke a space of reflection and focus on life and its beautiful mysteries.
“We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.”
